Datong, located in the northwest of Shanxi Province, is a city with a long illustrious history. While the city itself had long fallen out of favour with any imperial families many years ago, it still boasts the stunning Hanging Temple and Yungang Grottos.
The Hanging temples do just that. Clinging on the rock face, our tour takes to one of the wonders of China often ignored by others. Built more than a millennium ago, and subsequently restored under successive dynasties, the temples remain a feat of engineering.
Nearby, are the Yungang Grottos. Taking almost half a century to complete, these awe-inspiring rock hewn caves are truly a treasure of ancient China.
